Wisconsin Dems Fall Short of Big Gains in Assembly; GOP Expands Majority in State Senate

From WisPolitics.com …

Dems prevented Republicans from reaching two-thirds majorities in either house of the Legislature, but they fell short of big gains in the Assembly.

Still, Republicans picked up two seats in the Senate, while Dems only knocked off just two Assembly GOP incumbents despite significant spending advantages in their favor.

Former DATCP Secretary Brad Pfaff edged former GOP state Sen. Dan Kapanke in the open 32nd SD in the La Crosse area. But Green Bay attorney Eric Wimberger beat DePere Ald. Jonathon Hansen in the Green Bay area seat represented by the retiring Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay. And GOP Rep. Rob Stafsholt defeated Sen. Patty Schachtner, D-Somerset.

It puts Republicans at a 21-12 majority in the Senate, the largest majority for either caucus since the 1970s.

Both Dem pickups in the Assembly were suburban Milwaukee seats.

In the 13th AD, Dem Sara Rodriguez was at 51 percent, while Rep. Rob Hutton, R-Brookfield, was at 49 percent, according to unofficial returns.

In the 23rd AD, Dem Deb Andraca was at 51.6 percent compared to Mequon Republican Rep. Jim Ott’s 48.4 percent.

All precincts were reporting in both districts. Andraca declared victory shortly before midnight, while Rodriguez declared early this morning.

Meanwhile, Rep. Nick Milroy, D-South Range, was clinging to a narrow lead with all precincts reporting. He was at 50.2 percent to 49.8 percent for Republican Keith Kern, a difference of 139 votes.

If Milroy’s edge holds up, it would put Dems at 38 seats after Republicans started the session 63-36.
