WERC to Hold Certification Elections Beginning Friday

By Wisconsin School Administrators Alliance staff | November 26, 2013

The Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission will begin holding certification elections for some 400 local teachers unions on Friday.

WERC general counsel Peter Davis said commissioners James Scott and Rodney Pasch today voted to proceed with the elections for school district unions that had filed for recertification by a Sept. 1 deadline.

The elections had been put on hold after a Dane County judge found Scott and Pasch in contempt of court last month. Judge Juan Colás originally struck down Act 10 as unconstitutional for most local government employees, then issued his contempt order after WERC continued to process elections for those unions. The state Supreme Court invalidated the contempt order last week.

Voting is set to end at noon on Dec. 19. The local unions would need to gain approval from 51 percent of their eligible members to remain certified. Two state employee unions fell short of that threshold in elections that concluded last week.
