Response Needed — SAA Legislative Alert on Assembly Bill 1

By Wisconsin School Administrators Alliance staff | January 12, 2015

The SAA is issuing a Priority Legislative Alert on Assembly Bill 1.

Assembly Bill 1 (AB 1), relating to school accountability, will have a public hearing before the Assembly Education Committee at 10:00am on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 in Room 417 North, State Capitol.  The SAA is planning to testify in opposition to the bill.

Last Friday, January 9th, many district administrators and principals received a communication from the office of Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt  (R-Fond du Lac), chairman of the Assembly Education Committee.  In addition to providing Rep. Thiesfeldt’s perspective and commentary on AB 1, it also invited school administrators to provide their input on the bill.  WASDA and AWSA encouraged their members to respond to the invitation.  We are aware that dozens of SAA members have already responded to this invitation.

But, we can’t stop there!!

Capitol sources indicate the Assembly Education Committee is prepared to take executive action (vote) on the bill following Wednesday’s public hearing.  What’s more, Assembly leadership is planning to bring the bill to a floor vote in the Assembly as soon as next Tuesday, January 20th.

We urge SAA members to take action now Please contact Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt and Rep. Sondy Pope (D-Verona) in opposition to AB 1.  Rep. Pope is ranking Democrat on the Assembly Education Committee.  We recommend that you frame your communication drawing from two documents you received from the SAA late last week, “SAA Concerns About the Accountability Bill” (AB 1) and the SAA press release on AB 1.  Please draw from the points made in these two sources and add any personal reflections that complement this information.  In addition to contacting Rep. Thiesfeldt and Rep. Pope, it is extremely important that you copy your own Assembly Representative and State Senator on this communication.

For your convenience in contacting your legislators, we have provided links to the Assembly Directory, the Senate Directory and Who Are My Legislators.

If you should have any questions please email me.  Thanks for listening and, as always, thank you for everything you do on behalf of Wisconsin school children.
