Speaker Vos: “Highly Unlikely” Gun Bill Will Move Forward

A Republican proposal that would allow concealed carry on school grounds is “highly unlikely” to move forward this session, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said yesterday.

The Rochester Republican, speaking to reporters after the Assembly’s Rules Committee meeting, said he supports the concept of the bill but doesn’t see a pressing need for it this session.

“And quite frankly, as I have travelled around the state and I have been home in my district, there haven’t been a lot of people who have asked me for this,” Vos said. “Just like I said about campus carry, I support the bill, but it is not a high priority for Republicans. In fact, it is not a priority at all.”

Three Republican lawmakers are seeking co-sponsors for the proposal, which they say would mirror the Federal Guns Free School Zone law; that law allows concealed carry on school grounds. The proposal’s authors are: Sen. Mary Lazich, of New Berlin; and Reps. Jesse Kremer, of Kewaskum, and Robert Brooks, of Saukville.

The proposal also would let school districts decide whether concealed weapons would be allowed in schools.

Vos said he’s open to discussion, but the odds are against the legislation so late in the session. He acknowledged other bills have moved quickly through committee and to the floor, but he said the gun proposal is different.

“Quite frankly, on a lot of the other bills that we’re bringing up,” Vos said, “there has been a groundswell of support for them to make sure they get through the process.”
