LFB Releases State Support for Schools Memo

By Wisconsin School Administrators Alliance staff | October 5, 2016

From the Wheeler Report . . .

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau has released a memo on the 2015-16 Estimated State Support for School Districts.  According to the memo, the $6.3 billion total is divided as follows:

  • General School Aids: $4.5 billion
  • Categorical Aids: $751 million
  • School Levy Tax Credit: $853 million
  • First Dollar Credit: $150 million
  • State Residential Schools: $11 million.

The tables listed in the LFB memo show that Norris School District will receive the highest percentage of state aid at 99% state support, while Washington Island will receive the lowest percentage of state aid at 20%.

Please note that this memo uses the traditional calculation for state support of K-12 education.  Therefore the $1.003 billion in combined school levy tax credits and first dollar credits are included as state support even though these dollars show up as direct property tax relief on property tax bills and cannot be used by schools for educational opportunities for students.
